The 2010 Endoscopic Operations Survey was a follow-up to last year’s study.
The 2009 Endoscopic Operations Survey requested that endoscopic centers
submit practice characteristics, labor information, patient volume, income statement data, payer
mix percentages and pathology arrangements from their 2009 practice operations.

ASGE’s new education center: Building for the future
ASGE will be breaking ground on a new, state-of-the-art education center during the first quarter of
2012, and the ASGE Governing Board members and I want to share our enthusiasm for this project
with you: The global home of endoscopy. As far as we know, there will be nothing quite like it!
some quick history
It was during the term of 2007-2008 ASGE President, Grace H. Elta, MD, FASGE, that the governing
board realized ASGE was at a critical junction: What would GI endoscopy look like in the future,
and how would we train endoscopists in the new techniques that are evolving while we speak? The
current educational facility has limitations in space and capability, and we saw the need to start offering
training in new technologies as soon as possible.

Land was purchased, and architectural plans were drawn up. Then the economy took a downturn,
and we felt the pinch with the ASGE budget, too. Just as you may have experienced cutbacks in your
practice or at your academic medical center, the board decided that it would be imprudent to continue
with building plans until we could be sure that the financial marketplace stabilized.
Now that the economy is beginning to show signs of recovery and ASGE continues to hold a steady
course (see ASGE’s Chief Financial Officer Sam Haroz’s article on pg. 2 in the July/August issue), we
are proceeding with the new center.
Made possible, in part, through the
ASGE Foundation.
A note before I divulge the details. It’s critical for you to know that we are committed to our current
high level of educational, training and research programs. Any costs associated with the new center
will not diminish what has been and remains targeted for those ASGE core areas.
