Several changes were made to the Current Procedural
Terminology (CPT®) used to report gastroenterology services for
2011, based on the work of the GI societies and their advisors
through the American Medical Association’s (AMA) CPT process.
A few of the changes included in CPT® Coding Updates,
What’s New in CPT®: Coding Changes for 2011 are outlined
below. ASGE, the AGA Institute and the American College of
Gastroenterology developed a manual of coding changes for
2011, which is available online and was delivered electronically
to members on December 9, 2010.

Progress report on PIVI
As many of you know, I’m an advocate for endoscopic research and innovation to improve digestive
health outcomes in our patients. ASGE needs to help promote endoscopic clinical research to solve
important clinical issues. As such, I, with the help of Doug Rex and the ASGE Governing Board,
initiated, “The Preservation and Incorporation of Valuable Endoscopic Innovations That Improve
Digestive Health” (PIVI) program.
l Formalize a mechanism through which ASGE can identify important clinical endoscopic issues and
incorporate innovation to resolve those issues for clinical practice.
l Foster and preserve endoscopic innovations that resolve clinical issues and, in doing so, improve
digestive health.
l Protect ASGE from conflicts of interest, while assisting industry partners in technology development.

The process
PIVI brings together a committee of endoscopy experts after an important clinical issue, which requires
use of technology to resolve it, is defined. Each PIVI committee is charged with defining the threshold
a technology needs to achieve in order to resolve the clinical issue. Once an innovation has satisfied
the a priori-defined threshold, the society will support the incorporation of this innovation into
clinical practice. continued on page 4
