Bjorkman honored with Schindler Award
David J. Bjorkman, MD, MSPH, SM, FASGE, became
ASGE’s 57th Rudolf V. Schindler Award recipient on May 8,
during the Crystal Awards at DDW® 2011 in Chicago.
The society’s highest honor is given to a member whose
accomplishments in endoscopic research, teaching
and/or service to the society exemplify the standards
and traditions of Dr. Schindler, founder of the American
Gastroscopic Club, the forerunner of ASGE.
“Two descriptions come to my mind when I think of
David: outstanding intellect and natural leadership
talent,” said 2007-08 ASGE President Grace H. Elta, MD,
FASGE. “ASGE has benefited tremendously from both of
these traits.”
Dr. Fennerty presents the Rudolf V.
Schindler Award to Dr. Bjorkman.
Dr. Bjorkman has been a tireless volunteer for ASGE, starting in 1995 on the Standards of
Practice Committee and later becoming its chair. He also served as chair of the Abstract
Selection Committee for GI bleeding and chair-elect of the Publications Committee. After
joining the ASGE Governing Board in 1999, he served as secretary and DDW Program
Planner and was president from 2004 to 2005.

New strategic plan ready to implement
The 2011-2016 ASGE Strategic Plan is complete. We directed the energy generated from
an invigorating DDW® meeting into a two-day planning retreat at which the strategic
planning committee reviewed member input, listened to feedback from interviews,
discussed practice challenges, questioned the status quo and considered future scenarios.
With the help of past, present and future ASGE leaders – representing private practice and
academic medical centers – we emerged from our retreat ready to implement a solid plan
to guide the society’s next five years and beyond.
Solid foundation, promising future
Although we set an accelerated pace, we were thoughtful and comprehensive. We were
also fortunate. The previous strategic plan, developed by 2006-07 ASGE President Gary W.
Falk, MD, MS, FASGE, and the 2006-07 ASGE Governing Board, laid a firm foundation
for future efforts. continued on page 4
