5010 conversion?
Steps for a successful transition
by Jackie Griffin
On Jan. 1, 2012, providers must change to a new
standard format for submitting electronic claims
information or face potential delays in reimbursement.
However, nearly half of all practices have not even begun to implement these changes, according
to a recent Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) member survey.
®
The switch from the current 4010A1 format to the new 5010 format requires substantial changes
to the claims information physicians submit. It is extremely important that ASGE members be
aware of these Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) changes and take the
necessary steps to be in compliance by the Jan. 1 deadline. If these changes are not made, payors
may not be able to process practice claims.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) mandate includes upgrading the current
electronic transaction standard for health-care claims, remittance advices, eligibility and claims
status to X12 version 5010. Since the changes cover the data submitted with claims, as well as
the data received in response to electronic inquiries, implementation may require changes to the
software, systems and procedures used for billing transactions. continued on page 28

From fear and dread to confidence

My ASGE governing board colleagues and I headed into the November board meeting with
some measure of fear and angst, caught up in a whirlwind of extraordinary events beyond our
control. Even with the ASGE Institute for Training and Technology (IT&T) Capital Campaign
ahead of schedule, several favorable (but time-limited) bank loans to consider and years of
planning in our wake, we still felt the weight of decision-making upon us.

Uncertain times, harsh realities
Economic difficulties in the U.S. and Europe seem to have a choking grip on our future.
Citizens are taking to the streets and setting up “Occupy” camps here and abroad, protesting
high unemployment, slow job creation and insufficient social services, among other issues.
Prime ministers in Greece and Italy resigned to avert economic collapse in their countries. The
fallout continues from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown in Japan. We feel the
impact in the U.S. continued on page 4
